Privacy Policy

Last updated 5 October 2026

This policy explains what personal data Powered By The Culture (“we”, “us”) collects when you use this website, why we collect it and the rights you have under UK data protection law, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

We are the data controller for the personal data described here. You can contact us about privacy at any time at info@poweredbytheculture.com.

What we collect and why

Newsletter sign-ups

When you subscribe to our newsletter we store your email address, the date and time you signed up, where on the site you signed up, and a record that you consented to receive our emails.

  • Why: to send you our newsletter.

  • Lawful basis: your consent (UK GDPR Article 6(1)(a)). You can withdraw it at any time — use the unsubscribe link in any email or contact us, and we will remove you.

Reading statistics

When a story is viewed we record which story was read, when, a general traffic source (for example “Instagram”, “Google” or “Direct”) and a device type (mobile, tablet or desktop).

  • We do not use cookies or similar technologies for this, and we do not store your IP address, identify you or build a profile of you.

  • Why: to understand which stories people read so we can improve our journalism.

  • Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in running and improving the publication (Article 6(1)(f)).

When you email us

If you email us — for example with a story tip, a partnership enquiry or a job application — we use the details you send to respond, and keep the correspondence for as long as needed for that purpose. Job applications are kept for up to 12 months unless you ask us to delete them sooner.

  • Lawful basis: our legitimate interests in responding to you, or taking steps at your request before entering into a contract (Article 6(1)(b)).

Newsroom accounts

If you are a member of our editorial team, we store your name, email address and role so you can sign in to our publishing system.

Embedded content

Some stories include videos or posts from YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram or TikTok. Nothing is loaded from these services until you choose to play it. Once you do, that service may collect data about you under its own privacy policy.

Who we share data with

We do not sell your personal data. We use trusted service providers who process data on our behalf, under contract:

  • Supabase — our database and file storage, hosted in the European Union (Ireland).

  • Vercel — our website hosting.

  • Our email provider — to send the newsletter, if and when we use one; we will update this policy to name them.

Where a provider processes data outside the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as UK adequacy regulations or the International Data Transfer Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long we keep it

  • Newsletter details: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.

  • Reading statistics: these do not identify you; we keep them while they are useful for understanding our readership.

  • Emails: as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.

Your rights

You have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to how we use it, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any of these rights, email info@poweredbytheculture.com. We will respond within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or by calling 0303 123 1113. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.

Children

Our website is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal data.

Changes to this policy
