Hannah Smith, a 22-year-old Black woman and recent graduate of Miles College in Alabama, is currently fighting for her life after a devastating boating accident during a celebratory graduation trip in the Bahamas. On May 12, while aboard a pontoon boat in Nassau, Hannah fell into the water as the vessel was docking and was pulled into the boat’s propeller. The incident resulted in catastrophic injuries, including the partial severing of both of her legs.
Fellow passengers immediately pulled her from the water, and she was rushed to a local hospital before being medically evacuated back to the United States for further treatment. Her family has described her as a dedicated student and community member, having graduated summa cum laude just days before the tragedy.
The details surrounding the accident remain under investigation by Bahamian authorities. Some early reports speculated she may have jumped into the water, but her family disputes this account and maintains that she fell accidentally. They also assert that Hannah was not intoxicated at the time of the incident.
In response to the overwhelming medical costs associated with her surgeries, emergency transport, and long-term rehabilitation, Hannah’s family has launched a GoFundMe campaign. The fundraiser, organized by her sister Rachel Smith, is titled Support Hannah’s Endlessly Adventures & New Beginnings and has already raised tens of thousands of dollars from hundreds of donors.
